5 fuss free indoor plants
After reviving a garden in my building, I decided to bring home a few indoor plants. I mean, how hard could it be? Among the 10 plants that I adopted, some thrived and towered over the rest, some were fussy and some just couldn’t stand the test. My room has almost no sunlight, so these 5 plants are as fuss free as it can get.
Snake plant (dracaena trifasciata ): If you’re a new plant parent the snake plant is your best friend. It needs indirect sunlight, water once in 10 days and can survive in the darkest spaces. Can it get easier than this?
Tip: When I water my snake plant, I brush the leaves with a make up brush cleaning anything that has latched onto the surface or the soil.Zizi plant (Zamiocalcus zamifolia) - This strong, low maintenance plants can to grow in any corner of your house. The zizi prefers indirect light and can go without watering for 10 days - 2 weeks. It is also an indoor air purifier and grows at an alarming speed. What’s not to love!
Tip: Repeat the same make up brush grooming technique.Fittonia/nerve plant: This gorgeous plant grows extremely fast. Fittonias come in three colours- white, pink and red. It needs daily, bright indirect sunlight to grow better. When you expose the leaves to sunlight, the colour in the veins gets deeper, accentuating the nerve pattern. My fitonnia sits proudly on the brightest window sil of my house.
Tip: Fittonia’s enjoy mistings which is a great way to keep them hydrated, but continue to water the plant once a week.Peperomia: The newest edition to my plant collection, but it’s made a lasting impression on me. Peperomias are succulents, they need sunlight to thrive. I occasionally mist it, water it once a week and follow it up with indirect sunlight for 5 - 6 hours.
Tip: Peperomia’s thick leaves are very attractive, continue the brush technique here too.
. Money plant: A great plant for beginners, the money plant can survive in any lighting and has super fast, steady growth. It’s a thirsty plant and needs regular mistings or water every alternate day. They are usually low maintenance, but I did notice that lack of air circulation led to discolouration in the leaves.
Tip: Hang your money plants. Once it begins to grow out of the planter, the branches fall out beautifully. Keep it next to a window to give it fresh air regularly.Plant care, grooming and keeping a regular watering schedule may seem tedious, so I’m going to leave you with another tip - mist your thirsty plants daily and water all of them on the same day, together. Follow it up with lots of sunlight and fresh air.
I’m still new to plant care but I’d consider myself a plant parent. Are there any low maintenance indoor plants that you’d recommend? Do share them along with some plant care tips in the comment section.
